Fall is right around the corner and the apples are starting to drop from the trees. Making homemade applesauce is a great way to give your family a nutritious treat while saving a bit of money. I have made it on the stove top before but have heard that you can make it in a slow-cooker as well. I would assume that the recipe is very similar; if you have made it slow-cooker style or decide to try it, please post and let us know!
Top of Stove Method-
You will need:
Apples, water, 100% Apple juice, cinnamon (optional)
-Peel, core and cube enough apples to cover the bottom of the saucepan you are using.
-Add about a half inch of water (or apple juice) to the saucepan, and boil the apples until tender (Make sure you are watching the pot, if the water or juice runs out, add a little at a time until the apples are tender).
-Strain the apple chunks out of the remaining liquid, saving the liquid for thinning applesauce.
-Using a blender or hand held shake mixer, puree the apples to desired consistency (adding saved juice as needed).
Optional- add cinnamon a little at a time while blending to make cinnamon-applesauce.
Last time I made it, I poured the plain applesauce into ice-cube trays, covered with plastic wrap and froze small servings to feed to my 5 month old. You could also purchase some small plastic containers and send it to school in your child's lunch.
What other things have you added to applesauce to create a unique taste?
